Highlights: I couldn't pick a highlight
The Colombian extreme metal scene is always vital and many brutal band are burning the whole scene with their tough death\black metal albums, one of these bands is Atanab who has been formed before about twenty years ago and has released only three full-length albums and and two demos, and here I am reviewing the latest full-length album "Black Magic".
To be honest, I didn't find this CD catchy or memorable, because somehow the structure of the tracks weren't stable and many elements were missing, though there are a lot of exciting riffs and the drumming was really interesting, but the overall structure of the tracks weren't enough for me to find this album memorable. The vocals always intend to stay floating around the high pitch, which is so good for a black metal band, these demonic vocals reminded me of the album "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh" for the band Cradle Of Filth.
The production of the album wasn't my cup of tea actually because I always prefer those kinds of black metal albums that have a really tough and heavy rhythm guitars, but this album actually didn't contain this point at all; the rhythm guitar is buried under the loud sound of the drums and the vocals are covering most of the instruments. The tune of the lead guitars and the solos really caught my mind, these kinds of atmosphere reminded me of the old Marduk's albums. I really tried so hard to love this album but actually I didn't like this fast and hurried atmosphere of the tempo, because the structure of the tracks really needed some space for the memorable melodies.
At the end, I am not saying that this album is totally worthless, but I guess that the album needed more work, these tracks are grim and strong but they are not memorable enough for the black metal fans. If you are into the Colombian metal scene then you have to discover the nature of this band, but if you are not into the Colombian metal scene then I don't think that this album will catch your attention. Though the vocals were good and the drumming were so vital, but I found a lot of wholes in the structure of the album, I hope all these holes will be gone in the next releases.
